NEW WING AT CENTRAL HOSPITAL -- The first and second floors of the new wing at the Okinawa Central Hospital in Gushikawa are now under construction at a total cost of $648,300, of which the United States has provided $362,301 and tGovernment of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI), $286,000. These floors will have an out-patient clinic, now almost completed, and intern quarters and a medical library, scheduled for completion in December 1967. The GRI is expected to provide funds in FY 1968 for construction of the third and fourth floors which will be devoted to patients' wards. Opened in March 25, 1966, the hospital's bed capacity stands at 216 and is scheduled to increase to 400 upon completion of the new wing in 1968-1969. The building shown in the rear of the new wing is the main building of the hospital which was constructed and equipped at a total cost of $1.2 million -- of which the United States provided $1,149,000 and the GRI, $51,000.

This set of the bars was recently presented by the Ginowan Lions Club under its social welfare promotion program. In his speech at the commencement ceremony on Mar. 1, Col. Fairchild said: "there is lots to be done in the field of nursing and your willingness to work at your profession is greatly appreciated by the community. You will provide services based on human need, with respect for human dignity." Interpreting for Col. Fairchild is Miss Masako Shimabukuro, public health nurse at his office. The school has graduated 800 nurses since it was opened in 1949.

Fairchild said "You have chosen careers which are exciting and satisfying but demanding of self-sacrifice and hard work. There is lots to be done in the field of nursing and the community depends on your eagerness as an individual worker to maintain the highest standards of professionalism. " Interpreting for Col. Fairchild is Miss Masako Shimabukuro, public health nurse at his office.

The program is conducted by the University of Hawaii on behalf of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus and through the joint efforts of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) and the Government of Japan. The training is designed to elevate the Ryukyus' standards of medical practice and alleviate the local shortage of doctors. Five interns from the Ryukyus and three from Japan proper completed the first one-year intership class on March 28, 1968. The five Ryukyuans are continuing their residency training at the hospital. It was announced that they passed the Japanese national examinations for a license to practice medicine April 26. The program covers training in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency treatment, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, and psychiatry, including actual ward cases. Interns report on cases they have treated. They also attend a thrice-weekly English class to prepare themselves for possible further study abroad. The key feature of the program is that each intern joins with a GRI doctor and a University of Hawaii advisor in treating a patient from the moment the patient enters the hospital to the moment he leaves it. This 3-man team approach provides the patient with the benefit of expert care from an experienced doctor and advisor while furthering the experience of an intern. The OCH has 13 GRI doctors and 12 physician- nursing-technology advisors from the University of Hawaii.

As a result of the training, Mr. ■■■ learned to move himself without help from his bed to the wheelchair. Funds for the chair were donated last February by the Ginowan Lions Club of Okinawa and ordered from the United States by the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus. He suffered from the "bends" in July 1966 while he was fishing under water in Miyako. From the outset he suffered complete paralysis of his legs and bowel and bladder function. Dr. Yukihito Kishimoto, orthopedist, is treating the patient, and Dr. Sara Gault, physiatrist with the University of Hawaii advisory group at OCH, is the consultant on the case. As a result of the training, Mr. ■■■ learned to move himself without help from his bed to the wheelchair. Funds for the chair were donated last February by the Ginowan Lions Club of Okinawa and ordered from the United States by the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus. CONGRATULATIONS --Dr. Joji Arakaki (2nd from L), director, Okinawa Central Hospital (OCH) at Gushikawa, congratulates Dr. Seisho Higa (L), one of 11 doctors who have successfully completed the first one-year postgraduate medical training at the hospital. Others pictured are Dr. Neal L. Gault (3rd from L), medical director, University of Hawaii Advisory Group at the OCH; and Seibun Katsuren (partly shown), OCH hospital administrator. The completion ceremony was held at the hospital Mar. 28, attended by some 50 Ryukyuan and American medical officials, including Col. (Dr.) John P. Fairchild, director, Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Adminis­tration of the Ryukyus; Dr. Minoru Hara, chief, Medical Affairs Div., Welfare Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Islands; and Dr. Choke Ogimi, chairman, Okinawa Medical Association. Of the 11 doctors, seven from Okinawa and one from the Japanese mainland will remain at OCH for specialty training in internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery and obstetrics-gynecology. The two from the mainland returned to their alma mater, Kumamoto University, to continue medical practice or postgraduate study at the university hospital, and the remaining one from Okinawa, is to work with the Ishikawa Health Center to prepare himself for advanced training in public health and preventive medicine.

Bennett, Deputy Civil Administrator, delivers a congratulatory speech at a ground breaking ceremony marking the start of construction for the new Naha General Hospital and University of the Ryukyus' College of Health Science buildings. The ceremony was held on July 3 adjacent to the Naha Nursing School at Yogi, Naha, attended by some 50 persons including officials of the Government of Japan (GOJ), Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) and the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus. The new hospital building will be built at a total cost of $4,560,500 in GOJ and GRI funds, and is expected to be completed in September 1971. The 12-story modern hospital will have a total floor space of 25,328 square meters. The Health Science building will be constructed at a total cost of $690,280 in GOJ and GRI funds, and is expected to be completed on August 1970. Dr. Newman arrived on Okinawa on Aug. 3 with her husband, Dr. Robert B. Sudrann, director of the advisory group. Prior to her assignment to the advisory group, Dr. Newman was associate radiologist, Sacramento County Hospital, Sacramento, Calif. from 1963 to 1968. Her professional highlights include postgraduate radiologist, Medical Div., Oak Ridge Institute, Tenn., 1955-'56, junior research radiologist and clinical instructor in radiology, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, 1956-'57. Dr. Newman was licensed by the State of Ohio in 1951 and California in 1956.
