A group of medical college graduates -- eight from the Ryukyus and three from Japan proper --are participating in the second one-year postgraduate internship training program at the modern Okinawa Central Hospital (OCH) and three other medical institutions in Okinawa. The program is conducted by the University of Hawaii on behalf of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus and through the joint efforts of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) and the Government of Japan. The training is designed to elevate the Ryukyus' standards of medical practice and alleviate the local shortage of doctors. Five interns from the Ryukyus and three from Japan proper completed the first one-year intership class on March 28, 1968. The five Ryukyuans are continuing their residency training at the hospital. It was announced that they passed the Japanese national examinations for a license to practice medicine April 26. The program covers training in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency treatment, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, and psychiatry, including actual ward cases. Interns report on cases they have treated. They also attend a thrice-weekly English class to prepare themselves for possible further study abroad. The key feature of the program is that each intern joins with a GRI doctor and a University of Hawaii advisor in treating a patient from the moment the patient enters the hospital to the moment he leaves it. This 3-man team approach provides the patient with the benefit of expert care from an experienced doctor and advisor while furthering the experience of an intern. The OCH has 13 GRI doctors and 12 physician- nursing-technology advisors from the University of Hawaii.
