The canoe races at Itoman in which members of the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force participated, attracted some 30,000 visitors in addition to many American and Ryukyuan dignitaries, including Lt. General Donald P. Booth, High Commissioner of the Ryukyu Islands, and Mrs. Booth, Chief Executive Seisaku Ota and Mrs. Ota and Col. Elliott H. Reed, Naha Air Base Commander. During race festivities, Naha Air Base donate a check for $1,704 to Itoman for the construction of a cultural center.

Tomari port was constructed by the U.S. Army Engineers, Okinawa District with $2.5 million in American aid funds and its operation was formally transferred to Naha City which designated Tomari as a foreign trade port on August 1, 1954. The two-day program included canoe and motor boat races, open house, fire works, various exhibits and wrestling matches. The Army offered military vessels to take the people on brief sightseeing tour of the port area. The 29th Army and the 3rd Marine Division Bands also gave concerts during the festival.

Following a six-week refresher course at the university, the newsmen were scheduled to visit Washington and New York before returning via St. Louis, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hawaii. The mission, sponsored by the Office of High Commissioner, will observe current newspaper practices and study the highlights of the trends in American journalism during the tour.

A local Camera Company, operating in the Naha Free Trade Zone, has signed a contract with a French firm for its product and is pushing plans to double its production and numbers of employees. When the company began operation here in mid-June, 1961, it was the first time that the Ryukyu Islands had been involved in the production of cameras. They also visited a bingata textile dye works factory, a Tsuboya pottery factory, Kokusai street in Naha, Itoman, Nakagusuku Castle, the historic home of the Nakamura family, military installations including the Armed Forces museum, the Awase Meadows shopping center and the Machinato commercial area. At night the 16 students were entertained with traditional Ryukyuan dances and an exhibition of karate (an art of self-defense).

The shop added $52,000 to the Ryukyuan economy by purchasing Okinawa-made crafts and other goods in the Ryukyus during fiscal year 1962. $15,000 of the proceeds were channeled into welfare projects on Okinawa through the women's club welfare fund. Some 60 volunteer women work without pay at the shop.

The $300,000 ship was constructed with the aid of a $100,000 loan from the Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation (RDLC) and a $150,000 loan from the U.S. Van Camp Sea Food Company of California. Built-in Japan, the steel-hulled vessel was delivered to its owners, the Ryukyu Gyogyo Co., Ltd., in Naha, on Sept. 9 and departed on its maiden voyage on Oct. 4. Its destination is Ivory Coast, Africa, where it will commence an extended tuna fishing expedition. Aboard the 650-horsepower diesel-engined ship is a crew of 29, 19 of whom are Ryukyuans.
