Mrs. William H. Nelson, Jr. explains traditional Ryukyuan dolls to a U.S. Navy customer at the Ryukyuan Gift Shop, operated by the Fort Buckner Women's Club. The shop added $52,000 to the Ryukyuan economy by purchasing Okinawa-made crafts and other goods in the Ryukyus during fiscal year 1962. $15,000 of the proceeds were channeled into welfare projects on Okinawa through the women's club welfare fund. Some 60 volunteer women work without pay at the shop.
