The Zuieho-Maru, 245-ton queen of the Ryukyuan fishing fleet, transits the Panama Canal on Nov. 16, 1962 - the first Ryukyuan owned vessel ever to do so. The $300,000 ship was constructed with the aid of a $100,000 loan from the Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation (RDLC) and a $150,000 loan from the U.S. Van Camp Sea Food Company of California. Built-in Japan, the steel-hulled vessel was delivered to its owners, the Ryukyu Gyogyo Co., Ltd., in Naha, on Sept. 9 and departed on its maiden voyage on Oct. 4. Its destination is Ivory Coast, Africa, where it will commence an extended tuna fishing expedition. Aboard the 650-horsepower diesel-engined ship is a crew of 29, 19 of whom are Ryukyuans.

琉球の漁船、瑞祥丸245トンが、1962年11月16日に琉球の船として初めてパナマ運河を通過した。建造費30万ドルのこの船は、琉球開発金融公社から10万ドル、米国カリフォルニアのヴァン・キャンプ・シーフード社から15万ドルの融資を受けて建造された。日本で建造された本船は9月9日に那覇の琉球漁業会社に引き渡され、10月4日に処女航海を迎えた。目的地アフリカのコートジボワールで、マグロ漁の長期遠征を開始する。650馬力のディーゼルエンジンの船には琉球の乗員は19人を含む29人の乗組員が乗船している。
