the completion of the new wood processing factory of the Nanko Kamoku Company (NKC) at Ishado in Nakagusuku-Son on May 7. The $1.25 million factory will not only provide employment for a workforce of 450 persons, but the proceeds from the building materials will help to alleviate the chronic imbalance in the trade payments, thus contributing effectively to the economic betterment of the Okinawan people. The lumber will be imported from Indonesia. Mr. Reeves, representing High Commissioner James B. Lampert and Civil Administrator Stanley S. Carpenter, said "This plant is proof that Okinawan businessmen and investors have many opportunities to help themselves and these islands in developing a sound economy through perseverance and hard work."

NAHA O-HASHI DEDICATED - Civil Administrator Robert A. Fearey, on behalf of High Commissioner James B. Lampert, applauded the completion of the "impressive and sorely needed" Naha O-Hashi ("Big Bridge"), the south terminus of the $32 million Naha Bypass Highway, at a formal dedication ceremony on Oct. 8. The Civil Administrator described the 140-meter-long, 18-meter-wide span across the Kokuba River as a "major step into the future for the people of Okinawa." The United States has aready provided more than $15 million of appropriated and non-appropriated funds for the Bypass project, including more than $1 million for the bridge.

In his speech, Dr. Jensen said that the Children's Land will contribute significantly to provision of wholesome recreational facilities, prevention of delinquency, and serve as a living example of adult concern for the health, happiness and safety of Okinawan youth.

コザ市の沖縄こどもの国が5月5日に正式にオープンし、琉球政府屋良朝苗行政主席や立法院星克議長、琉球列島米国民政府厚生教育局長ロバート・T・ジェンセン博士、コザ市長大山朝常氏、南方同胞援護会大浜信泉会長らが出席し、ジェンセン博士が祝辞を述べた。右は厚生教育局通訳官フランク・F・ノムラ氏。スピーチの中でジェンセン博士は、こどもの国は健全なレクリエーション施設の提供と非行の防止に大きく貢献し、沖縄の若者の健康、幸福、安全に対する大人の関心が生きた例として役立つ、と述べた。
