GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY of the Okinawa Hilton Hotel was held at Kishaba, Kitanakagusuku-Son in central Okinawa was attended by Ryukyuan and American officials, Sept. 16. At the ceremony, High Commissioner James B. Lampert said "Tourism already has become the third-largest source of dollar income to the Ryukyuan economy, topped only by income from expenditures of U.S. Forces in Okinawa and sugar exports. Visitors to the islands numbered 147,000 in 1968, representing a 32 percent increase over 1967. Recent studies sponsored by the civil administration conclude that increased manufacturing and tourism offer the greatest potential for achieving desired goals in economic growth rates. Trans World Airlines Hilton International and local associates are to be congratulated on their foresight in planning for a first-class 200 guest-room hotel facility for construction on this beautiful site. The venture has the full and enthusiastic support of the U.S. Civil Administration. The Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation has shown its confidence by investing $2.8 million in a long-term loan," he added. The total construction cost of the hotel is $4 million. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 1971.
