17. OBSTACLES TO VICTORY- THE RESISTANCE OF MAN AND BACILLUS. Human resistance to the discipline of taking potent drugs regularly for a long period means that the tubercle bacillus is subjected to only a half-hearted attack and this gives it the time to mobilize a drug-resistant population. Once this has happened there is no reprieve: the bacillus that has been "immunized" through the patient's negligence produces other bacilli just as impervious to the effect of the drugs to which it is resistant. Our photo shows Work on drug resistance in a pharmaceutical laboratory in the United Kingdom. Special precautions include different colouring of items in each laboratory (including protective clothing of the operator) to prevent confusion with work going on in other labs.
World Health Day, observed each year on 7 April, marks the anniversary of the coming into force of the Constitution of the World Health Organization.

17. 勝利への障害 - 人間と細菌の抗争 。強力な薬を長期間定期的に服用するという規律に対する人間の抵抗力は、結核菌が弱い攻撃しか受けず、それによって薬剤耐性集団を組織する時間を与えてしまうことを意味する。そうなってしまったら猶予はない。患者の不注意によって"免疫化”された菌は、耐性を持つ薬が効かない他の桿菌を作り出す。写真は英国の製薬研究所での薬剤耐性についての研究風景。特別な予防措置として、他で行われている作業との混同を防ぐため、各研究室（オペレーターの防護服を含む）の物品の色を変えている。毎年4月7日の世界保健デーは、世界保健機関（WHO）憲章発効記念日。
