LEPROSY EXPERTS CONCLUDE VISIT HERE -- Two U.S. Public Health Service specialists (center) held a news conference on June 11 after the completion of a 16-day tour of leprosaria in the Ryukyu Islands to evaluate the Hansen's disease program in the Ryukyus and provide consultation and technical assistance to Government of the Ryukyu Islands public health personnel. Also present were U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) public health officials. Shown L-R: Col. William G. Brubaker, medical director, and James McCullough, senior health service officer, both of the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital, Carville, La; and Capt. Carter L. The two specialists, who arrived on Okinawa May 28 at the invitation of USCAR, stressed that the most important aspect in the treatment of leprosy is early diagnosis. They said that most leprosy can be cured, deformity can be prevented, and the spread of the disease reduced to a minimum, especially if diagnosed early.
