ANTIDOTE FOR HABU SNAKE POISON -- Assistant Professor Yoshio Sawai (L), chief of the Laboratory of Biological Products, Institute for Infectious Diseases, University of Tokyo, is pictured inoculating one of about 3,000 persons of Kamimotobu-son, northwestern Okinawa, who received the first of two innoculations [inoculations?] of habu toxoid on Oct. 12 and 13. Two doses of habu toxoid are necessary to insure one-year immunity to habu poison, Dr. Sawai said. He arrived on Okinawa on Oct. 4 under the sponsorship of the Government of the Ryukyu Island (GRI) with the cooperation of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) for the survey of habu snakebites in the Ryukyu Islands. Habu toxoid, the first antidote in the world for this deadly snake's poison, was developed after ten years of experimentation by Dr. Sawai and his staff. Dr. Sawai and his staff administered habu toxoid to about 2,000 persons on Amami Oshima Gunto, north of Okinawa, last year and reported the results as satisfactory.
