"SO DES KA!" Stoic, perturbed, questioning, anxious young lads of the Tsuboya Elementary School, Naha, bare their strong right arms to the friendly nozzle of a painless jet injector as booster and initial anti-cholera immunizations got underway in the Ryukyus yesterday, Feb. 4. Administering inoculations are Yuko Higaonna (L), technician of the public health section, Welfare Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Islands, And Nobuko Itokazu, public health nurse. Public health authorities estimate that more than 500,000 Ryukyuans, from one year through adulthood, will be inoculated under the current phase of the program. The program began last summer when cholera outbreaks in the Far East posed a threat to the Ryukyus. However, prompt and coordinated action by American and Ryukyuan public health authorities in effecting immunization and personal-community sanitation programs kept the Ryukyus cholera-free.

「ソウデスカ！」。冷静、動揺、好奇心、不安。昨日2月4日、琉球では抗コレラ予防接種を開始。那覇市立壺屋小学校では、無痛ジェット注射器の抵抗を感じさせることのないノズルに、児童たちが、たくましく右腕を差し出している。接種を行うのは琉球政府福祉部公衆衛生課のヒガオンナ・ユウコウ（左）とイトカズ・ノブコ保健師。琉球政府の見積もりでは、今回のプログラムで、1歳から成人までの琉球人50万人以上が接種を受けることになる。プログラムは、昨年極東でコレラが発生し、琉球の脅威となった昨年夏に始まったもの。米国と琉球の公衆衛生当局が迅速かつ協力して予防接をスタートし、個人・地域の衛生プログラムを実施した結果、琉球はコレラのない状態を維持することが可能となった。
