Lt. Col. Charles A. Hammaker, Deputy Provost Marshal, U.S. Army, Ryukyu Islands received a letter of appreciation from the Government of the Ryukyus Police Chief Kitoku Azama during a ceremony held at the latter's office on Dec. 17. Lt. Col. Hammaker was commended for his vital interest in the preservation of law and order during his tenure since September 1969. The citation said, Lt. Col. Hammaker has endeavored to establish a high moral standard and discipline among the U.S. Forces personnel and has cooperated with the local police in incidents of mutual concern, rendering invaluable service in solving many incidents in an amicable and just manner." Harriman N. Simmons (C), director, Public Safety Dept., USCAR, also attended the presentation ceremony. LTC Hammaker is scheduled to leave Okinawa shortly for a new assignment.

米陸軍憲兵隊副隊長のチャールス・A・ハンメイカー中佐は、12月17日、琉球警察本部長室で安座間喜徳本部長から感謝状を贈られた。同中佐は、1969年9月に就任以来、法と秩序の維持に多大の関心を寄せ、努力してきたことを讃えられたものである。感謝状は「ハンメイカー中佐は、米軍兵士のモラルの向上と綱紀粛正に努力し、軍民に関係のある事件では警察と協力し、友誼かつ公正な態度で問題解決に臨み、その尽力ははかり知れないものがある。」と述べている。感謝状贈呈には、民政府のハリマン・N・シーモンズ公安局長も出席した。ハンメイカー中佐は赴任のため、近く沖縄を離れることになっている。
