Some $15,600 worth of materials to build a new modern fire station was donated to the city of Nago by the U.S. Army Ryukyu Islands. Among the materials donated were lumber, steel, cement blocks, plumbing and electrical equipment and other hardware items. The new fire station will be a two-story, reinforced concrete building with a 65-foot observation tower. Shown at the construction site studying a blueprint of the fire station are (l to r): Yosei Arakaki, Nago police chief; Masatoki Onishi, mayor; Chosho Matsudo, fire chief; Takashi Yabu, architect; and Harriman N. Simmons, director of Public Safaty, Office of the High Commissioner, who represented High Commissioner Paul W. Caraway. The project was sponsored by the Office of the High Commissioner with the approval of the High Commissioner, Col. Winston L. Jones, assistant chief of staff G-3, USARYIS, and Maj. Leslie L. Laglar, USAEG, were responsible for coordinating obtaining the materials. Additional funds to complete the construction will be solicited through the efforts of civic organizations in Nago.
