CIVIL ADMINISTRATOR STANLEY S. CARPENTER,
addressing the 10th anniversary of the Naha Rotary Club at the Harborview Club on Jan. 21, commended the club for its "many, many worthy community activities" and declared the club to be an "outstanding exponent" of the Rotary motto - "He Profits Most Who Serves Best". Mr. Carpenter observed that Naha Rotary Club, when it was presented its charter on Jan, 12, 1959, had just 26 members - a membership which has expanded to four times that number. (Naha Rotary fostered the local growth of the movement which now totals eight Rotary clubs with 300 active members in the Ryukyu Islands.) The Civil Administrator spoke of the personal ties the Naha Rotary Club has with America, "such as the fact that an American, the Right Reverend Edmond Lee Browning, Episcopal Bishop of Okinawa, is a person whose active participation in the daily life of the community is epitomized by his membership in Naha Rotary"; also, "your esteemed president, Dr. Hiroshi Azama, lived for two years in the United States while a student at the University of Vermont from 1952-54."
