AMERICAN DOCTOR DONATES SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS -- An American doctor, a former psychiatrist at the U.S. Army Hospital, donated a set of surgical instruments to the Government of the Ryukyu Islands for use at its leprosarium. The gift was handed to Hikoichi Kawamitsu, deputy director of the GRI's Social Affairs Department, Tuesday, May 2, by Maj. Winston Powell, medical operations officer of the Public Health and Welfare Department. Maj. Powell acted for Dr. Betty Johnston who has already left Okinawa, accompanying her husband, Lt. Col. William Johnston of the U.S. Army who was reassigned to the United States. Dr. Johnston, a graduate of the University of Michigan, said that she was donating the instruments so that they can continue to serve the sick and unfortunate. The instruments were given to her upon graduation from medical school by an old physician friends who inspired her to become a doctor.
【和訳】米国の医師が手術器具を寄贈 - 元米軍病院の精神科医が琉球政府のハンセン病療養所あてに手術器具一式を贈った。5月2日の火曜日、公衆衛生福祉局ウインストン・パウエル少佐から琉球政府厚生局カワミツ・ヒコイチ副局長へ寄贈品が手渡された。パウエル少佐は、米国に再配属された夫の米陸軍ウィリアム・ジョンストン中佐に同行して既に沖縄を離れたベティ・ジョンストン医師の代理。米国ミシガン大学卒のジョンストン医師は、病気や不遇な人たちに引き続き対応できるよう器具を寄付したと語った。器具は、彼女が医師を志すきっかけとなった旧知の友人医師から医学部卒業の際に贈られたもの。
