A completion ceremony for nine physicians who completed residency training and 11 physicians who completed first year of training was held at the Okinawa Central Hospital (headed by Dr. Joji Arakaki) Mar. 28. Attending the ceremony were Robert T. Jensen, director of the Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil administrations of the Ryukyu (USCAR); Dr. Fumio Yamakawa, director of the Welfare Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI); and Dr. Zenshi Inafuku, president of the Okinawa Medical Association. The postgraduate medical education program at a OCH is conducted by advisory consultants from the University of Hawaii (U-H) and funded by USCAR which contracted with the U-H in November 1965 to provide advisory services at the OCH aimed at helping elevate standards of medical practice and alleviate the shortage of doctor in the Ryukyus. Since 1967, the training program has progressed to the point where 32 medical school graduates, of whom 24 came from Okinawa and eight from the Japanese mainland, have participated in the program. The philosophy of the hospital in regard to postgraduate training is that an excellent teaching; program requires the services of a full-time staff for teaching; that the trainee be provided with the means for actual participation in patient care and the assumption of responsibilities according to his training and ability; that only a definite number of cases be assigned to the trainee; and that time is provided for independent study. The Okinawa Central Hospital is a 216 bed general hospital contructed and equipped with the latest medical equipment at a total cost of $2,264,194 of which $1,591,110 was provided by the United States, $671,084 by the GRI. Total hospital personnel is 273 which includes 14 full-time psysicians, one dentist, and 99 nurses, and the U-H advisory group of 10 physician-advisors. ≪中部病院（新垣浄治院長）で9人の研修医がレジデンシー（専門医学研修）、また11人が1ヶ年目の医学研修をそれぞれ修了し、その修了式が3月28日同病院で催された。修了式にはロバート・T・ジェンスン米国民政府厚生教育局長、山川文雄琉球政府厚生局長、稲福全志沖縄医師会長等が出席した。同研修計画は米国民政府が沖縄の医師不足の緩和と医療水準の向上を計るため1965年11月にハワイ大学と契約を結んで同大学が民政府の資金援助で実施しているものである。医学研修が1967年に開始されてからこれまで32人の医師（24人は沖縄出身者、8人は日本々土出身者）が研修を受けている。中部病院における医学研修の方針は(1)同研修計画では常勤の教授陣が研修医の指導に当たる(2)研修医も実際に患者の治療に当たらせ、研修の程度と個人の能力に応じて責任を持たせる、(3)研修医には一定数の患者だけを受けもたせる。(4)独自の研案を行う時間を与えることである。中部病院は216ベットを有し、総工費2,264,194ドルで建設され、最新の医療器具が備えられている。総工費のうち1,591,110ドルは米国援助で、671,084ドルは琉球政府が負担した。同病院は14人の常勤医師、1人の歯科医師、99人の看護婦等237人の職員をかかえている。なお、ハワイ大学の顧問医師は10人である。≫
