Mrs. James B. Lampert, wife of the High Commissioner, visited Okinawa Central Hospital (OCH) and Koza Nursing School at Miyazato, Gushikawa City on Oct. 15 as part of her familiarization tour of local medical and welfare institutions. Mrs. Lampert was accompanied by Mrs. William T. Rapp, wife of the commander, Patrol Forces, 7th Fleet; Capt. (Dr.) Anthony F. Vuturo, preventive medicine officer, and Frank F. Nomura, interpreter, of the Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR). The central hospital, operated by the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI), was constructed at a total cost of $2,264,195, of which USCAR provided $1,591,110 and GRI, $673,085. The nursing school, also operated by GRI, was constructed at a cost of $186,000 of which GRI provided $96,000 and USCAR, $90,000. The central hospital has 13 physicians and eight University of Hawaii (U-H) physician-advisers who help the OCH staff carry out its post-graduate medical training program under contract with USCAR.
