A postgraduate medical training program has been conducted by a full-time teaching staff of the Okinawa Central Hospital (OCH) advised by consultants from the University of Hawaii (U-H) since 1967. A ceremony will be held at the OCH on April 28, 1971 honoring 13 physicians completing their second year of training as residents and 14 physicians completing one year of training as interns. Including the 27 doctors completing their first and second years of training on April 28, 1971, the program has progressed to the point where 46 young physicians -- 36 from the Ryukyus, and 10 from the Japanese mainland --have participated in the program since its inception in 1967. The program is funded by the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR) and the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI), and is conducted according to guidelines recommended by the Council of Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association and supported by the Government of Japan, GRI and the Okinawa Medical Association. USCAR has so far provided nearly $2.7 million for the program. The GRI provides each first-year trainee with a stipend of $180 and each two-year trainee with $250 a month for living expenses in addition to living quarters at the hospital without charge. The philosophy behind the program, which has won wide acclaim in the Japanese mainland as well as in the Ryukyus, is that the trainee receives the services of a full-time teaching staff, participates in patient care and assumes responsibilities according to his training and ability, is assigned only a definite number of cases, and has time for independent study and research. The first year of the postgraduate studies includes internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, emergency treatment, and an elective course. Besides instruction related to the actual care of patients, the trainees attend conferences, seminars, meetings and English language classes. The OCH also conducts two years of residency training in the fields of medicine, pediatrics, surgery and obstetrics-gynecology. ≪中部病院の医学研修計画は1967年以来、ハワイ大学の顧問医師の指導助言にもとづき、中部病院の常勤医師によって実施されている。今年(1971年)も4月28日に、1ヶ年目の研修を終えた医師14人及び2ヶ年目の研修を終えた医師13人の修了式が行われる。同研修計画は実施以来、目ざましい発展を遂げ、これまで46人の医大卒業生（36人は沖縄出身、残り10人は日本本土出身）がこの研修を受けた。同研修計画は米国民政府及び琉球政府の資金で実施されているもので、米国医師会が支持している指針にもとづいて行われている。この研修計画が1967年に開始されて以来、米国民政府はおよそ270万ドルを受助し、琉球政府は毎月、1ヶ年目の研修医に180ドル、そして2ヶ年目の研修医に250ドルの生活費を支給しており、更に病院内にある宿舎も無料で提供している。中部病院に於ける研修計画は、沖縄はもちろん、日本本土でも好評を博しているが、同研修の方針は、各研修医が優れた教授陣（中部病院の常勤医師）の指導の下で、患者の治療に当たり、研修の程度や能力に応じて責任を持ち、一定数の患者のみを担当し、されに研修医には研究室や研究を行う時間が与えられることである。1ヶ年目の研修医は内科、外科、産婦人科、小児科、急患治療及び選択科目の研修を受ける一方、会議やセミナー等に出席する。また、語学能力を付けるために英語クラスも受けている。さらに、中部病院では、内科、外科、小児科、及び産婦人科の専門医研修（2ヶ年間）も行われている。≫
