The Okinawa Nurses Association held its 20th anniversary ceremonies at the Ryukyu Shimpo Hall in Naha on April 9. The ceremonies were attended by some 400 nurses and guests, including Mrs. James B. Lampert, wife of the High Commissioner; Dr. (col.) Robert T. Jansen, director, Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus; Dr. Fumio Yamakawa, director, Welfare Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI); and Koshin Nakayama, director, Education Dept., GRI. In her speech, Mrs. Lampert praised the Okinawan nurses for their competence, industriousness and devotion to their noble cause. She said, "I am especially proud that the United States was able to assist this association in its earlier years through the pioneering efforts of the late Mrs. Juanita Watterworth and Mrs. Josephine Kazer. And I am happy to note also that the USCAR staff and the nurses of the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp Kue have continued to assist you in your endeavors. Such mutual support and assistance is in keeping with a profession that transcends international boundaries".
