PUBLIC HEALTH CONVENTION -- The Second Okinawa Public Health Convention was held at the Naha Civil Auditorium at Yogi, Naha, on April 7, attended by some 200 health officials, including Dr. (Col.) Robert T. Jensen, director of the Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus; Dr. Fumio Yamakawa, director of the Welfare Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI); and Dr. Zenshi Inafuku, president of the Okinawa Medical Association. In his speech, Dr. Jensen (L, standing) pointed out five public demands in the Ryukyus: Good health care should be provided for both acute and chronic illnesses at the convenience of the public and not just at the convenience of the health workers; the health care system should be simplified and streamlined; the cost of health care should be spread by some general tax measure or health insurance system; the environment should be made safe from the pollution of man and the products of his industry; and life, in general, should become more orderly and less emotionally disruptive. The theme of the second convention was "Let's promote the health of the prefectural people in this advancing society and beautiful environment." ≪第二回沖縄公衆衛生大会が4月7日、那覇市与儀の那覇市民会館でロバート・T・ジェンスン米国民政府厚生教育局長、山川文雄琉球政府厚生局長、稲福全志沖縄医師会長等約200人の健康関係者が出席して催された。ジェンスン局長は挨拶の中で次の5項目を指摘した。1.優れた保健サービスは保健関係者ばかりでなく、一般住民の便宜をはかり、急性や慢性の病気の治療にも提供されるべきである。2.保健業務の制度は簡素化され、かつ能率的になされるべきである。3.保健のための医療費は幾つかの一般課税方式或いは健康保険でカバーされるべきである。4.人間や産業製品による汚染から安全な環境を守らなければならない。5.人生は一般的により秩序正しくあるべきであり、感情的分裂を少なくすべきである。第二回沖縄公衆衛生大会のテーマは「社会の進歩と美しい環境の中で県民の健康を推進しよう」であった。≫
