BRIEFING ON WATER POLLUTION -- The U.S. Civil Administration (USCAR) held a briefing at its conference room on December 18 on the problem of pollution of the Hija and Nagata rivers as a result of indiscrimate disposal of nightsoil in their watershed. Lt. Col. (Dr.) Francis K. Gates, Jr. (L) chief, Preventive Medicine Section, the Army Medical Center, explained the results of an examination of water quality in the rivers and pointed out that the pollution has far exceeded U.S. standards, thus presenting a serious hazard to public health. Interpreting for him is Edward M. Kaneshima. of the Health, Education and Welfare Dept. (HEW), USCAR. The briefing was attended by Civil Administrator Robert A. Fearey; Col. (Dr.) Robert T. Jensen, director, HEW, USCAR; and Hirosada Ohama, president, Ryukyu Domestic Water Corporation. Following the briefing, the newsmen toured and viewed the polluted area.
