HANSEN'S DISEASE CONVENTION -- The seventh annual convention for the prevention of Hansen's disease, sponsored by the Government of the Ryukyu Islands and the Okinawa Anti-Hansen's Disease Association, was held at the Ryukyu Life Insurance Building in Miebashi, Naha, Nov. 10. Dr. (Capt.) Rollin J. Hawley; preventive medicine officer, Health, Education and Welfare Dept. (HEW), U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, delivered a congratulatory speech. Standing at right is Edward M. Kaneshima, interpreter. In his speech, Dr. Hawley said that "we look forward to the day when fear and shame are completely overcome, people are glad to have their problem discovered and treated early," and "when general hospitals take over the treatment of patients needing brief hospitalization, and when intense rehabilitation returns many of those with chronic residual disease to their places in society." ≪ハンセン氏病予防大会--琉球政府及び沖縄ライ病予防協会主催のハンセン氏病予防大会が、11月10日、那覇市内の琉球生命ビルで催された。写真は米国民政府厚生教育局の予防医学官ローリン・J・ハウリー大尉が祝辞を述べているところ。右側に立っているのはエドワード・M・カネシマ通訳官。ハウリー医師は祝辞の中で「私達はハンセン氏病に対する恐怖と羞恥心を完全になくし、患者が喜んで早期発見と早期治療に協力し、一般の病院が短期入院を要する患者の治療を行い、しかも強力なる更生指導を行うことによってらい病院が必要でなくなる時期を期待しています。」と語った。≫
