The Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) Welfare Department began a Ryukyu-wide triple-phased anti-polio and DPT immunization program for more than 28,000 Ryukyuan children on Oct. 19. The U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR), is supporting the program, by providing $10,187 from its disease control funds for the purchase of polio vaccine; GRI provided DPT vaccine at a cost of $4,970. USCAR previously provided $23,000 from the same fund for the purchase of measles vaccine to support the GRI's anti-measles vaccination program conducted from Sept. 21 to Sept. 30, 1970, for about 20,000 children between the ages of one year and two and a half years. The first phase of the polio and DPT immunization program will be conducted until Oct. 31 at health centers, municipal offices and other public facilities by GRI medical personnel with assistance of municipal officials. The second phase, for DPT immunization only, will be from Nov. 16 to Nov. 30. The second phase of polio and the third phase of DPT will be from Dec. 14 to Dec. 31.
