DISCUSSING ANTI-FILARIASIS PROGRAM -- Visiting American and Japanese entomologists are shown reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of the filariasis eradication program sponsored jointly by the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR), Government of the Ryukyu Islands, and the Government of Japan. Lt. Col. Alexander A. Hubert (R), chief, Department of Entomology, 406th Medical Laboratory Camp Zama, Japan and Dr. Manabu Sada (2nd from R), director, Institute of Medical Science, Tokyo University, are shown with Dr. (Col.) Robert T. Jensen (2nd from L) and Dr. (Capt.) Rollin J. Hawley, preventive medicine officer, of the USCAR's Health, Education and Welfare Dept. (HEW) in the HEW director's office June 9. As a result of continued American-Japanese technical assistance, the filariasis eradication program has reduced the incidence rate in the Miyake Islands to 3 percent of the population, compared with approximately 17 percent in 1965, and the incidence rate in the Yaeyama Islands has been reduced from 8 percent in 1967 to 3 percent of the population. The program was launched in Miyake in 1965 and in Yaeyarna in 1967.
