SPRAYING OPERATION --Eizo Uezu, sprayman, Ishikawa Health Center is shown spraying residual insecticide on houses near the home of a recent victim of encephalitis on Henza Island Aug. 2. Medical teams of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) and the U.S. Civil Administration (USCAR) successfully completed a three-pronged operation of survey, education and spraying Aug. 2 designed to eradicate mosquitos and flies on Henza Island, three miles northeast of the Katsuren Peninsula on Okinawa. The operation was in response to a request from Village Chief Tokuichi Tamae to High Commissioner F. T. Unger when the latter visited the island July 25 as part of a fact-gathering and get-aquainted[acquainted?] program aimed at improving the welfare and well-being of the people in rural communities in the Ryukyus. Survey teams were dispatched to the island on July 26 in the first phase of the operation. The teams found evidence of larvae and maggots in such breeding site as rain water catchments, water containers and drainage, and discussed the findings with island officials and residents. The public health teams visited the island Aug. 2 and promoted public health understanding by holding lectures and showing movies. On the same day, they conducted a spraying-fogging operatic over breeding sites of mosquitos and flies. Participating in the survey on July. 26 were Major Ronald W. Intermill, entomologist, U.S. Army Medical Center; Dr. Duane A. Sebahar, chief, Public Health Branch; Omer E. Roller, sanitary engineer and Mrs. Haruyo Yoshioka, public health nurse of HEW, and GRI sanitarians. The action teams on Aug. 2 consisted of 26 sanitarians and sprayers from the GRI Ishikawa Health Center headed by Takashi Matsuno, chief, Sanitation Section; Seizo Sakihara, public health specialist, GRI Welfare Dept.; Dr. Sebahar; Mr. Roller; Hiroshi Nakata, public health inspector, and Miss Masako Shimabukuro public health nurse, all of HEW. ≪米国民政府と琉球政府の医療班は8月2日与那城村の平安座島でカとハエを駆除するため予備調査、衛生教育及び殺虫剤の散布作業を成功裡に完了した。この計画はアンガー高等弁務官が沖縄へき地住民の福祉安寧の増進をはかるために行っている。地方視察計画の一環として去る7月25日同島を訪問したとき玉栄徳市区長から要請があって実現されたものである。同計画の第一段階として予備調査班が7月26日に同島に派遣されたが、同調査班は天水タンク、水入れ、排水溝等カとハエの幼虫が生息している事実を発見し、その調査結果について島の指導者や住民と話し合った。公衆衛生班は8月2日に同島を訪れ講演と映画を通して公衆衛生思想を高める一方カとハエの棲息場所に殺虫剤の散布を行った。7月26日に派遣された予備調査班は、米陸軍医療センターの昆虫学者ロナルドW.インターミル少佐、米民政府厚生教育局の交流衛生課長デューアンA.セバハ軍医、オーマーE.ローラー衛生官、ハルヨ・ヨシオカ公看及び琉球政府の衛生官等である。8月2日に派遣された医療班のメンバーは石川保健所の衛生課長松野孝団長を含め26人の衛生官と消毒系、厚生局の崎原盛造衛生官、厚生教育局のセバハ医師、ローラー氏、ヒロシ・ナカダ公衆衛生検査官、島袋昌子公看等であった。≫
