SECOND OKINAWA MENTAL HEALTH CONVENTION -- attended by about 500 persons, was held May 24 at the Okinawa Children's Hall in Miebashi, Naha. Maj. Richard S.Clark (R), Welfare Officer, Welfare Division, Public Health & Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR), representative of the High Commissioner, said "The problem of providing adequate mental health services in an evolving modern society, is a complex and extremely challenging one... Today, mental illness is a major health problem that affects not only the afflicted, but also his family and the entire community." Shown interpreting for him is Masako Oshiro (L) of the welfare division. The objective of the convention was to strengthen mental health activities through social understanding and cooperation.
【和訳】第2回沖縄精神衛生大会 - 那覇市美栄橋の沖縄少年会館で5月24日、約500人が出席して大会が開かれた。 高等弁務官に代わり米国民政府公衆衛生局福祉部福祉担当官リチャード・S・クラーク少佐は「進化する現代社会において適切な精神保健サービスを提供するという問題は、複雑で非常に困難なものである。今日、精神疾患は罹患者だけでなく、その家族や地域社会全体に影響を及ぼす大きな健康問題である。」と述べた。通訳するのは福祉課のオオシロ・マサコ（左）。大会の目的は、社会の理解と協力を通じて精神保健活動を強化すること。
