CAPPING CELEMONY -- The Government of the Ryukyu Islands Naha Nursing School held its annual capping ceremony for 40 junior student nurses on May 12 in the school's auditorium. Carrying a lighted candle, each student solemnly ascended the platform to receive a cap from her teacher. Shown lighting a candle and receiving their caps are (L-R): Tamiko Asato and Sachiko Azuma, both student nurses; and Yoshiko Odo, nursing instructor. Congratulating the newly-capped nurses were their parents, teachers, and friends, and Col. William G. Brooks, director, Public Health and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands. In his graduation address on behalf of the high commissioner and the civil administrator, Col. Brooks said, "The caps that you receive tonight are a symbol of the dignity of the profession that you are pursuing, and you should always wear them with pride … You must work together as a team to continuously seek current and advanced information in the field of nursing and always strive for professional improvement.
