WELFARE EXPERTS VISIT SCHOOL FOR RETARDATION -- Two internationally-known experts in mental-retardation, who arrived on Okinawa June 24 at the invitation of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR), recently visited the School for Mental Retardation, which is located in Ohira, Urasoe-Son. Shown during an abacus or "soroban" lesson being conducted by Shinei Kanehama (R), teacher at the school, are (L-R): Dr. Satoru Izutsu, director of the Waimano Training School and Hospital; Junryo Kinjo, head teacher; Seicho Tokuyama, principal, both of the School for Mental Retardation; and Mrs. Sylvia Levy, planner for mental retardation programs of the State of Hawaii. Dr. Izutsu and Mrs. Levy made a two-week visit to the Ryukyu Islands to provide consultations in the field of social welfare services for USCAR and the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI). During their visit, they met with Okinawa and Miyako Jaycees concerned with mental retardation programs, the parents and teachers of mentally-retarded children, and GRI and USCAR welfare officials. They departed for Japan July 6.
