FILARIASIS EXPERTS REVIEW PROGRESS IN CONTROL PROGRAM -- Discussing a periodic review of the filariasis control program in the Miyako island area are (L-R): Dr. Manabu Sasa, professor at the Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo University, and advisor to the World Health Organization filariasis control program; Lt. Col. Vernon J. Tipton, entomological advisor to the anti-filariasis program in the Ryukyu Islands and chief of the Entomology Department, U.S. 406th Medical Laboratory at Camp Zama, Japan; and Capt. Carter L. Marshall, chief, Medical Division, Public Health and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR). Dr. Sasa and Lt. Col. Tipton arrived on Okinawa at the invitation of USCAR and the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI). Col. Tipton succeeds Lt. Col. Hugh L. Keegan, who has long provided support for joint USCAR-GRI-Government of Japan public health programs in the Ryukyus and Dr. Sasa has been with the program since it was first launched in January 1965 in Miyako.
