FILARIASIS EXAMINATIONS were conducted the evening of March 3 in Tanahara Village, Nishihara-Son, east-central Okinawa, and blood samples of more than 400 people were collected by U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) and Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) public health personnel. The blood collections were made in the evening because the tiny micro-filaria which cause the disease lurk in the body's lymphatic glands during the daytime and appear in the bloodstream only at night. Pictured (L-R) are: Capt. Carter L. Marshall, preventive medicine officer, Public Health & Welfare Dept., USCAR; Miss Yukiko Shiroma, clerk, Tanahara Village Hall; two young village residents; and Seikichi Shiroma, laboratory technician, Ryukyu Hygienic Research Laboratory, GRI.
