PREVENTIVE EXAMINATIONS FOR EYE DISEASE -- The third-grade students of the Takara Primary School, Naha, are shown here being examined for trachoma by Shoichi Nakasone (L) and Koshin Oshiro, temporary assistants for the trachoma examiner, Medical Preventive Section, Public Health Div., Welfare Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Islands ( GRI). Mrs. Yoko Miyagi, teacher, is shown in the background with her class. The GRI medical personnel examined 1,351 students from Jan. 10-14, finding 377 definite cases of trachoma. The examinations were part of the joint five-year anti-trachoma program of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands and the GRI in cooperation with the U.S. Army Special Forces, Asia. The long-range trachoma control and eradication program throughout the Ryukyu Islands will be carried out during the first year among 53,000 primary and junior high school students in Naha, and among 83,000 primary and junior high school students throughout the other islands that have populations over 3,000.
