THE EYES HAVE IT -- The "kick off" of the five-year anti-trachoma program, to control and eradicate trachoma throughout the Ryukyu Islands, began Oct. 29 on the off-shore islands of Takabanare. U.S. Army, Ryukyu Islands（USARYIS) Special Action Force Asia (SAF Asia) and Government of the Ryukyu Islands personnel visited Miyagi Shima off northeast Okinawa., where they examined 4,873 persons in 12 days, listing 1,530 definite cases of trachoma. This is a joint venture of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) providing medical and administrative personnel and other assistance, USCAR providing funds for drugs, supplies and equipment, and SAF Asia -- at GRI request--assisting with medical personnel and transportation. The program calls for a follow-up effort until complete eradication of trachoma is accomplished on all islands with a population under 3,000. A control program conducted on islands with a population of more than 3,000 will be gradually phased into eradication. The treatment includes the application of medications twice-a-day for eight weeks, followed by a re-examination within four to six months.
【和訳】≪琉球のトラコーマを抑制し、撲滅するためのトラコーマ撲滅5カ年計画が10月29日、高離島で始まった。在沖米陸軍、アジア地域特別活動部隊隊員と琉球政府職員は東海岸の宮城島（高離島）を訪れ、12日間で4,873名を検診し、そのうち1,530名のトラコーマ患者を発見した。この計画は琉球政府が医療並びに管理要員その他を提供し、米国民政府が薬品や器材、器具、そしてアジア地区特別活動部隊≫が琉球政府の要請を受けて医療要員の輸送を支援する共同事業である。 ≪トラコーマを完全に撲滅するまで徹底的な努力を要するこの計画は、人口3,000名以下のすべての島で実施されている。人口3,000名以上の島で実施された撲滅計画によって、次第に撲滅の成果があらわれることであろう。治療は8週間にわたって1日に2回、薬物を適用して行われ、4～6か月以内に再検診がある。≫
