FROM 5 MALARIA CASES TO NONE -- Major Carl Pace, chief, Sanitation Division, Public Health and Welfare Department, U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR), points to the five malaria cases reported in the Ryukyu Islands in 1961 -- the last year in which any malaria was reported in the islands -- compared to the 1,262 cases reported in 1957. With him is Dr. Keisho Omine, head of the Yaeyama Islands Health Center of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands, who departed for Ceylon to represent the Ryukyu Islands at the Fifth Annual Asian Malaria Conference, Oct. 20 - 27, sponsored by the U.N. World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Omine was nominated to attend the conference by USCAR and the WHO paid all expenses.
