GRI MEDICAL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM - is substantially advanced by a new GRI Mobile Medical Equipment Maintenance Shop, which is capable of providing rapid emergency as well as routine maintenance and repair calls to all Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) hospitals throughout Okinawa. Inspecting the Mobile Maintenance Shop are Matsuzo Uechi (squatting), maintenance technician trainee and Mitsuo Izumi, driver and maintenance technician, both of GRI Welfare Dept. Officials said that the saving in replacement costs realized through good maintenance, more than pays the maintenance costs. The cost of the new mobile repair van, complete with all necessary tools and machines was $9,696.80. Officials pointed out that the cost of the largest of three new X-ray machines recently installed at the Okinawa Central Hospital was $27,485. With proper maintenance, the life expectancy of this one X-ray machine is estimated to be 25 years. Without maintenance, its usefulness will be only five to 10 years, or two-thirds of the value of this single large X-ray machine, which would amount to $9,162, representing the monetary value lost through lack of a maintenance program.
