FIRST POLIO SHOT, PAINLESSLY ADMINISTERED: Under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel (MC) Joseph W. Cooch, Assistant Chief of Preventive Medicine, Office of the Army Surgeon General, Washington, D. C., the first painless inoculation of Salk vaccine in the Ryukyu Islands is administered to a four-year-old child by Mr. Gensho Sunakawa, sanitary inspector, Naha Health Center, Okinawa. The shot was administered during the training program of Ryukyuan public health service personnel on Friday, August 4, by American medical exports. The mass inoculation program, involving 146,000 Ryukyuan children between the ages of one through five years, will begin on Monday, August 21.
