HAND-OPERATED DDT FOG SPRAYERS at work in a rice paddy in the Ryukyu Islands. Malaria has dropped from a high of 160,098 cases in 1946 to four cases in 1960 and five cases in February, 1961; there have been no malaria cases since that time. If the zero level of malaria cases can be maintained until February, 1963, public health officials can announce the eradication of malaria in the Ryukyus. However, surveillance of humans and a reduced spray program will still be necessary in the future to prevent malaria from ever returning to the Ryukyus.
