Unger Sept. 26 issued a declaration making available $200,000 for the relief of Ryukyuan victims of Typhoon Della which struck various parts of the Ryukyus from Sept. 21 to 23. The High Commissioner on Sept. 24 visited Tonaki and Aguni islands and on Sept. 25 he and Government of the Ryukyu Islands’ (GRI) chief Executive Seiho Matsuoka toured Miyako and Kume islands for first-hand inspections and discussions with victims of the typhoon. Teams of U.S. Civil Administration and GRI officials conducted inspections in Miyako on Sept. 24. Typhoon Della carved a destructive swath across the Ryukyus, killing five persons and injuring nine. Hundreds of dwellings and other structures were destroyed or damaged.
