The Japan Medical Association presented two American doctors the "Supreme Japan Medical Association Award" for their "outstanding contributions" in developing key modern medical education programs in the Ryukyus. The recipients were Dr. (Col.) John P. Fairchild, director of the Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, from July 18, 1966 to June 2, 1969, and Dr. Neal L. Gault, Jr., medical director of the University of Hawaii's post-graduate medical education program at the Okinawa Central Hospital from July 22, 1967 to June 15, 1969. They received the awards from JMA President Taro Takemi on Nov. 1 at the JMA's 22nd-anniversary conference held at the Akita Prefectural Government Building in Akita, mainland Japan. The JMA praised Dr. Fairchild for his work in developing the School of Health Science at the University of the Ryukyus and for contributing to the "stimulation of medical interchange between the United States, Japan and Okinawa." Dr. Gault was cited for his development of an unparalleled two-year postgraduate curriculum for training young doctors from mainland Japan and Okinawa while he was director of the education program at the OCH. Dr. Fairchild is now executive officer, U.S. Army Walter Reed General Hospital, Washington D.C., and Dr. Gault is associate dean, University of Hawaii College of Medicine.

日本医師会は、沖縄の近代医学教育に貢献した二人の米人医学博士に最高優功賞を授与した。受賞者は1966年7月18日から1969年6月2日まで米国民政府厚生教育局々長として勤めていたジョン・P・フェアチャイルド医博 (大佐) と、1967年7月22日から1969年6月15日まで中部病院のハワイ大学医学顧問団々長を勤めていたニール・L・ゴールト医博である。同優功賞は11月1日秋田県庁で催された第22回日本医師会議の席上、武見太郎医師会長から手渡された。日本医師会はフェアチャイルド医師が琉球大学の保健学部の発展と日米琉間の医学交流の促進に尽した功績を賞讃し、またゴールト医師が中部病院で沖縄や日本本土出身の若い医師に対してすぐれた教育方針をもってユニークなカリキュラム編成に尽力したことを表彰した。フェアチャイルド医師は、現在ワシントンD.C.在米陸軍ウォルターリード総合病院の行政官を勤めている。ゴールト医師は、ハワイ大学医学部の副部長を勤めている。
