The Launching of two new fishing vessels at Tomari Port's Naha Shipbuilding Yard took place May 14, 1964, when Mr. Arthur H. Grimmett, (left), local representative, Van Camp Sea Food Co. of Long Beach, Calf., and Mr. Teruyuki Nakada, superintendent, Miss Yoshiko Uema, employee. and Mr. Chiyu Hamamoto, president, all of the Nanyo Fisheries Co., cut a symbolic ribbon. The vessels, built for operation under an agreement between the fisheries company and the Van Camp firm, will fish for skip-jack in the South Pacific, using Van Camp facilities at Palau Island as a base. The two new vessels are part of a fleet of six 25-ton, 90-horsepower fishing craft recently built at Tomari, Itoman and Baten, each carrying 14 Ryukyuan crew members, two Ryukyuan bait catchers, and eight Palau natives. Total catch in a one-year operational period beginning July 1 is forecast by the fishing companies to be 6,300 tons.
