Dedication ceremonies Jan. 23 formally opened the $4.5 million Haneji Sugar Mill of the Hokubu Sugar Manufacturing Company of northern Okinawa. Civil Administrator Gerald Warner said in a speech at the ceremonies that "with the cooperation of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands, manufacturers must direct their attention to the strengthening of their competitive position with respect to other sugar-producing areas of the world if they are to progress." He added that "the future of the industry in the Ryukyus will depend on the productivity of modern mills" like the new Haneji mill. The mill, using a new high-pressure diffusion-clarification-filtration process in operation thus far only in Hawaii, is "capable of reducing operating costs and allowing every cane sugar producer to meet lower prices," said Hokubu's president, Mutsuo Nakada. The mill was financed with a $2,874,000 loan from the Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation, a $500,000 loan from the Bank of the Ryukyus, and $1 million was raised by private subscription.
