U.S. ARMY HELPS DROUGHT-STRICKEN IKEMA ISLAND A U.S. Army Second Logistical Command landing craft and a seagoing tug sailed from Naha Port Aug. 7 carrying some 18,000 gallons of potable water for 2,100 drought-hit residents of Ikema Island in Miyako Gunto. The landing craft, with four potable drinking water tankers aboard, and the tug were provided in response to a call for help submitted Aug. 6 by Ikema officials to the High Commissioner's representative at Hirara City, Miyako, Lt. Col. Juji J. Hada. The command's Transportation Directorate and USCAR's Public Works Department promptly coordinated relief arrangements with the approval of High Commissioner James B. Lampert. The LCU, with the help of the powerful seagoing tug, is expected to reach Ikema, off the northern tip of Miyako, some 180 miles southwest of Naha, on the evening of Aug. 8, unload, and on Aug. 9 proceed to Hirara Port in the southern part of Miyako. The two vessels are scheduled to remain in that area transporting additional water from Hirara to Ikema as needed. 【和訳】 マスターキャプション
