Lt. Col. Ronald L. Ingraham (R), commander, and Lt. Col. Donald G. Simpson, pilot, of the 33rd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron (ARRS) at Naha Air Base, were thanked Oct. 1 by Skipper Kim Yong Ho and Chief Engineer Sin Yong Un of the S/S Young Poong, a Korean cargo ship, for their rescue of 37 crewmen by a helicopter from the squadron (rear). The 4,200-ton ship ran aground on a sandy beach on jungle-covered Iriomote Island, 275 miles southwest of Naha, when Typhoon Elsie hit the southern Ryukyus, Sept. 26. The Government of the Ryukyu Islands Coastal Radio Station picked up an SOS signal from the vessel on the same day and relayed the message to USCAR Public Safety Dept., which contacted the Air Defense Control Center at Naha Air Base. A chopper from the 13th Air Force at Clark Air Base, Philippines, located the ship on Sept. 27. The crewmen were evacuated by a helicopter from the 33rd ARRS to nearby Ishigaki Island from Iriomote on Sept. 28. They then sailed to Naha aboard a ship on Sept. 29.
