A dredger, trucks and bulldozers are now in full operation placing over 100,000 tons of hydraulic fill material into 60 acres (73,440 tsubos) of tidelands within the recently completed seawall between Naha Port and the Naha Civil Air Terminal for a multi-million dollar new Naha Civil Air Terminal project. The first phase of the air terminal expansion program - land reclamation of reef and tidelands including construction of the seawall - is being Carried out by Oshiro Gumi of Naha at a cost of $1,774,689, under the supervision of the U.S. Army Deputy Division Engineer, West Pacific, acting as agent for the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI). To finance this initial phase, the U. S. is providing $1 million and the Government of Japan, $700,000. The funds covered costs of engineering services and preparation of master plans for the new terminal complex. The master plan, completed in March 1970, calls for construction of a large terminal building, aircraft parking apron, dual taxiways, underground fixed apron facilities. When completed in 1975, the new terminal complex will be capable of handling up to three Boeing 747s, one airbus, two DC-8s and six Boeing 737s at a time, and one and a half million passengers annually.
