The Tokyo Maru at a reception in commemoration of the arrival of the ship at Naha commercial port, July 22. The ship will provide improved regularly-scheduled passenger service between Naha and Tokyo. The Ryukyu Development Loan Corp. furnished $1,981,000 of the $2,950,000 total cost of the ship. The High Commissioner praised the 500 percent growth of the Ryukyuan shipping industry in the past ten years. During 1959, the total revenue generated on the Japan-Ryukyus shipping routes was $5.1 million. Of this, Ryukyuan companies earned $1.7 million. In 1968 the total shipping revenue from both cargo and passenger services over the same routes was $18 million. Of this, the Ryukyuan companies' share was $8.3 million. Total passenger revenue during 1968 was $3.56 million, of which the Ryukyuan carriers earned $2.1 million.
