The Meiko-Maru, 1,500-ton cargo vessel owned by the 0kinawa Kisen Kaisha Co., Ltd. (OKK), arrived on its maiden voyage at Tomari Port Jan. 27. Capt. At left is Tatsuro Fujita, language aid, "The Ryukyuan maritime industry has made and is making a very tangible contribution to the economic well-being of the Ryukyus," the Deputy Civil Administrator said in his congratulatory speech at the ship's arrival ceremony, "The U.S. Civil Administration is happy to have played a part in the development of this industry, first through the furnishing of surplus military vessels, later through GARIOA assistance, and more recently through the Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation financing." The purchase of the ship by OKK was made with the assistance of a $320,000 loan from the American Express Company under a guarantee from the RDLC, and a $130,000 loan from the Bank of the Ryukyus.
