Ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of Okinawa's largest water development project-the Fukuji River dam and reservoir was held July 16. In front of a bulldozer at the construction site in Higashi-Son, northern Okinawa are (L-R) Deputy Civil Administrator Edward E. Bennett, representing High Commissioner James B. Lampert; Chief Executive Chobyo Yara of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands; Hirosada Ohama, president, Ryukyu Domestic Water Corp.; and Aner W. Erickson, president, Asian American Construction Inc. (AAC). The total cost, $12 million, is being provided by the RDWC and the U.S. government. When completed in April 1972, the reservoir will be the main source for the island water system. Overall supervision and inspection is by the U. S. Army District Engineer, Okinawa on behalf of RDWC. The initial phase of the project will be carried out as a joint venture of AAC and D. R.
