RYUKYUAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' SUMMER WORK-STUDY PROGRAM is designed to provide an opportunity for Ryukyuan university students to receive six weeks of on-the-Job training in work closely related to their academic studies. The U.S. Army provides the training facilities and the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR), under its technical education and training program, pays a training allowance to the students. Since the summer work-study program started in 1960, a total of 807 Ryukyuan students have participated in the program. This year 98 students from the University of the Ryukyus and the Okinawa Commercial Institute are studying at various offices at Headquarters, U.S. Army, Ryukyu Islands; Strategic Communications Command; Special Services Office; Post Engineer, Military Education Center; U.S. Army Hospital; Okinawa Regional Exchange; U.S. Army Engineer. District, Okinawa; 2nd Logistical Command; USCAR; Ryukyu Electric Power Corporation, and Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation. The program is arranged by the Army Civilian Personnel Office in coordination with each organization participating in the program. The project administrator is Yoshinobu Maekawa, employee development specialist, Zukeran Area Civilian Personnel Office.
