A U.S. Forces aircraft air-evacuated a 22-year- old man from the island of Kumejima to Naha, April 26, for emergency blood transfusion. The mercy flight was performed by a CH-21 helicopter of the Fort Buckner Flight Detachment piloted by Maj. R. Grants. Assisting in the flight were co-pilot CW3 Richard G. Watlack and crew chiefs SP6 John A. Dearmin and SP6 Phillip H. Hirata. The patient, ■■■, was diagnosed by Gushikawa-Son doctors as suffering from lung distoma and in need of an immediate blood transfusion. The doctors' recommendation was reported through the Government of the Ryukyu Islands police to the Public Safety Dept. (PSD), USCAR, which coordinated with Dr. John P. Fairchild, Director, Public Health and Welfare Dept., USCAR. The PSD also coordinated the information with the Naha Air Defense Control Center, which dispatched the helicopter from Hamby Airfield. A Naha Hospital ambulance sped the patient to the hospital where a blood transfusion was administered.
