High Commissioner Paul W. Caraway is shown breaking the ground to signify the start of construction of a new $30,000 Ryukyuan-American cultural center in Itoman. Also participating in the ceremony were Col. Edward P. Foote, commander of Naha Air Base, and Takezo Tamaki, mayor of Itoman. When completed, the center will receive support in its operations from the Office of the High Commissioner and personnel of Naha Air Base which takes a special interest in the neighboring town of Itoman. During the ceremony, held Tuesday, Sep. 5, Col. Foote made a surprise presentation of $358.20 from the 16th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron to the cultural center. Earlier this year, the High Commissioner granted $15,000 from his special community development fund for the project.
