Director Lewin Goff (second from left) of the University of Kansas University Theater was presented a Ryukyuan three-stringed musical instrument, the "samisen," from Kazufumi Uechi (second from right), chief editor of the Okinawa times during the troupe's tour of Okinawa early this month. Watching Mr. Uechi explain the instrument are (L to R): Mrs. Goff, Mrs. Uechi, Yumi Uechi and Sam Kitamura of the Office of Public Affairs, U.S. Civil Administration. The editor of Okinawa's largest vernacular newspaper presented the "samisen" in appreciation for the troupe's performance of the musical play, "Brigadoon," for a Ryukyuan audience on Aug. 10. Mr. Uechi's younger daughter, Kazumi, will be enrolled at the University of Kansas during the coming school year under a Department of the Army scholarship. She will study journalism.
