Director Lewin Goff (second from left) of the University of Kansas University Theater was presented a Ryukyuan three-stringed musical instrument, the "samisen," from Kazufumi Uechi (second from right), chief editor of the Okinawa times during the troupe's tour of Okinawa early this month. Watching Mr. Uechi explain the instrument are (L to R): Mrs. Goff, Mrs. Uechi, Yumi Uechi and Sam Kitamura of the Office of Public Affairs, U.S. Civil Administration. The editor of Okinawa's largest vernacular newspaper presented the "samisen" in appreciation for the troupe's performance of the musical play, "Brigadoon," for a Ryukyuan audience on Aug. 10. Mr. Uechi's younger daughter, Kazumi, will be enrolled at the University of Kansas during the coming school year under a Department of the Army scholarship. She will study journalism. The Kansas troupe toured Okinawa under the sponsorship of the United Service Organization and the American Education Theater Association during an eight-week swing through the Far East.
【和訳】 カンザス劇団監督へ「三味線」
今月初めから沖縄を訪れているカンザス大学劇団監督のルウィン・ゴフ氏(左から2人目)に、沖縄タイムス編集長の上地一史氏 (右から2人目) から琉球三弦楽器「三味線」が贈られた。ウエチ氏の説明を聴く (左から) ゴフ夫人、ウエチ夫人、上地ユミ氏、琉球列島政府広報局サム・キタムラ氏。沖縄最大の新聞社編集長は、8月10日に上演された劇団のミュージカル劇「ブリガドーン」に感謝して「三味線」を贈呈した。上地さんの下の娘の一美氏は、カンザス大学に陸軍省奨学金を得て来学期にジャーナリズム専攻で入学する予定。カンザスの劇団は米国慰問協会と米国教育演劇協会の後援で、極東をめぐる8週間のツアーで沖縄を訪れた。
